Exhibitions: Whitework - 11th March to 17th April 2004
An exhibition of contemporary textiles for the L’oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival 2004.

Textile designer-maker Ilka White presents a ‘contemporary trousseau’ exploring the contents of a metaphorical glory box. New work that rethinks old notions of inheritance and endowment and celebrates personal independence.

Whitework is a textile term that refers to white thread/stitching/applique etc produced on a white material.

The exhibition uses this technique to explore the ‘glory box’ tradition, investigating the making of identity and worth. A rich and intricate collection of textiles entirely in white, inter-woven with song lyrics and symbols, employing both traditional and cutting edge techniques.

‘White’ is also the family name of the artist and a metaphorical glory box of text/songs (passed down from the artists mother and other sources) form the inspiration for the works and also at times appear as ‘whitework’ within the collection.

The exhibition celebrates the process of making along with the product. A samplers wall displays technical trials, sketches, yarn samples, weaving graphs, smocking and embroidery designs, and collected poems, lyrics and thoughts relating to the project’s themes.
